The new WordPress 3.1 update is out and this is what it brings into the dashboard of all WordPress users.

If you are using WordPress, you might have noticed that the 3.1 update is now available and ready to download directly from your blog dashboard or you can simply go to the main WordPress website and get the installation kit for the new version directly. This 14th version dubbed “Reinhardt” brings quite a few improvements over the previous one in terms of functionality, but also when it comes to the aspect of your blog. You can take a closer look at the full list of changes here, but most of them are small tweaks that help make the platform more stable.

Most Significant WordPress 3.1 Improvements

One of the most important aspects that come with WordPress 3.1 is the internal linking feature. Most blog owners will eventually have something to say about a previous article. Until now, finding the link was a tedious job, but this is not a problem anymore. You can browse your history directly from the dashboard and copy the link you want in a matter of seconds.

There are quite a few changes when it comes to layout: the admin bar is a little bit different, the writing interface was simplified, and you will also notice a few new buttons. The admin bar is definitely the biggest visual change and it will make life easier for those who are running multiple blogs at the same time. However, if you only have one blog and you don’t like this addition, you can easily turn it off from the admin menu.

The biggest difference that will be noticed by your visitors is brought by the possibility of customizing certain posts through the new Post Formats feature. This option allows you to display different content in a unique way. Your visitors will appreciate this change if you are used to writing a special column each week or some other type of post which would require special formatting.

Should You Update to WordPress 3.1?

Most people will sleep on the thought of going through another big update, but there is nothing to worry about. If you feel that these changes can help you save time or write better posts, you should click on the update button and everything will be over in a matter of minutes. You should only have second thoughts if your blog contains multiple unverified plug-ins, but we haven’t seen any reports of incompatibility so far, so the chances of having a problem with this update are quite low.

Final Thoughts

You might not be a fan of change, but WordPress 3.1 seems to be a step in the right direction and whether you download and install it now or do it later, you will eventually have to take this step and get used to the minor changes brought by this update. Some of the features are pretty helpful and you will definitely enjoy the Post Formats feature and the fact that you can save time by linking to internal posts much faster than you did before.

Every Blogger wants his blog to look more professional by having a domain name rather than a subdomain like (username.wordpress.com) and that was the main reason why I moved to a self hosted platform. Folk at Wordpress.com realized this need and now they give you a option to choose your own domain name.

Simply go to Options > Domains in your WP Admin Panel and enter your domain name in the box. If you registering a new domain, they charge you 15$ per year (all inclusive), else if you already own a domain name, you can map it for 10$ per year and update your nameservers.

Any visitors to your blog’s old URL will be automatically redirected to its appropriate new URL. If you don’t like the domain name, you can always revert back to your same old subdomain. Pricing seems to be pretty reasonable to me. What’s your opinion ?

Although I don’t have a blog at WordPress.com, I really welcome this new feature and I hope WordPress.com allows bloggers to place ads on their blogs in future (Consider this as my Wishlist)

P.S Some Users have randomly been given a free domains for a year. A Handful of them rather. If you have a blog at wordpress.com check out your dashboard and if you don’t have one register yourself and you might be lucky enough to free domain..

Now Digg from Your Blog

Of late I Have seen many blogs that allow you to submit stories to Digg from their sites itself. But nowhere could I find a site that allows you to digg stories without visiting Digg i.e. without leaving the site...

I did a bit of research and found that Digg has nice little API that allows you to do this…

So I made it as a plugin for wordpress. All that you need to do is just activate the plugin and edit your posts so that they show up the digg button i.e. enter the URL in the box in the right side of Create/Edit Post. And anyone who visits that article will directly be able to digg from your site…

At present the plugin adds the add to digg option if no URL is entered. I think the API needs a little refinement so that it doesn’t open the digg.com page after a digg has been given.

INSTALLATION

Just upload the contents of the zip to your wp-content/plugins directory… Keep in mind the directory is similar to what is given below,

wp-content/plugins/digg_live/digg_live.php
wp-content/plugins/digg_live/digg_button.gif

Once Uploaded activate the plugin and add the call to digg live in your template like this…

this will show the digg button on your site.. If you have not entered any URL in the Create Post area the area shows a digg this button for your visitors.

To style the button use the id digg_live_wrapper in your style sheet.

CREDITS

A Very special thanks to Yoshi in the support forums in helping me create this plugin. This plugin displays a link to both digg and my site. If you don’t want to show the links please add the following to your style sheet.

#digg_live_credits {
visibility: hidden;
}

All Done.. Have Fun with the plugin and tell me what you feel.. Download From Here

10 Things I would like to See in WordPress

Well Wordpress remains my favourite publishing medium today. But customizing the code of wordpress to suite my needs is an near impossible thing. As such I would like to see some changes in Wordpress so that it becomes more easier to use...

1) Redesigning the Admin Area , to use Frames

Using Frames in the admin area will make the work of many people easier specially those on a dial-up connection like me.. And of course I would like to see Shuttle in wordpress as soon as possible..

2) Modifying XML-RPC
This is one urgent need so that I can use my favourite plugins like UTW from my Desktop Publisher.. At Present I use a workaround for UTW by adding all my tags in [tags]a,b[/tags] in post..

3) RSS customization
I Would like to publish the most popular posts on RSS in the main RSS feed which wordpress gives in a differant division alltogether. So I would have about 3 Most Popular posts and 10 Latest posts in the feed. This helps me in drawing more visitors.

4) Quick Edit Mode
This is more or less like the WYSIWYG editor but minus all the extra stuff like categories, tags, trackbacks, custom fields. This would bascially help me in editing a post very quickly.

5) Online Editor
This is more or less like Edit n Place a wordpress plugin. I would like this to be built into wordpress so that it helps in editing a post when viewing the Permalink itself using the magic of AJAX..

6) Easier User Registrations..
I think a user should be allowed to fill up his profile while registering itself and also be able to choose a password himself. I don’t want wordpress to automatically generate a password.

7) Introduce Configurable Widgets
This is a really cool thing according to me.. I think the user should be allowed to configure the widget, its apperance etc to his taste and not depending completely on the theme.

 Better Admin Navigation
At Present it takes atleast 3 clicks to reach the panel of your choice. I think it should’nt be like this. Basically I would like a menu system wherein you can the panel of your choice with a single click..

9) Introduce Live Search and Commenting in the Core
This would help a great deal. Designers need not incorporate the code into their themes. All they need to do is style the elements. Another thing to do would be to give the user a choice to choose to choose between Livesearch and Vanilla search and also to choose between Live commenting and normal commenting in the admin panel..

10) Code Optimization
Oflate I see that wordpress becomes slower and slower with every new release. WordPress has lost its speed and charm that it used to have in the 1.5x Editions. I would like see the code being optimized heavely so that regains that speed and charm.

11) Spread the Word
Well this is more of a general concern. I would like to see WordPress launch a massive campaign like firefox does and make the people aware of the advantages of using wordpress as their publishing medium..

Well this is not an exhaustive list of everything I would like to see in wordpress but a small percentage of it. I belive that these implementations into WordPress would do a great deal to the blogging community..

If You would like to see something in wordpress please let me know and let the community know about these thoughts. Please feel free to comment and let your ideas flow..

My First wordpress theme fauxed is up for public release.. well i have not completely designed the theme by myself but i have borrowed large parts of the design from 5ThirtyoneV2.. I would like to thank Derek Punsalan because without his theme i would'nt have been able to make Fauxed..</p

>

Fauxed is my “improvement” of 5ThirtyoneV2.. Fauxed features:

a two column shelf in the top portion of the blog

a three column faux footer (to be widgetised soon)

Live Commenting

Support for Extended Live Archives

Better Support for asides

Support for noteworthy posts (coming soon)

and lots more….

Widgetising the theme and support for more commonly used plugins remains my chief priority and i plan to release them in the near future..

The Other thing is that Fauxed retains all the features of 5ThirtyoneV2 like support for Ultimate Tag Warrior, Ryan’s Contact form etc…

Installation Instructions

Installation of fauxed is like any other wordpress theme..

Download the zip file from here

extract and open the fauxed directory

open topside.php and edit the about text

open header.php to edit the navigation links

open shorts.php and edit your asides category

open home.php and again edit your asides category

upload the files and plugins to wp-content/themes/ and wp-content/plugins and activate the theme and the plugins

thats it and you are up and running.. if you have any issues please use the comment form below..
